The Importance Of Social Sciences
I still remember my days as a young student. Going to school itself was a big bore. I literally had to force my way to the school on a daily basis. I did it because my parents, my mom in particular, was very insistent that I go to school regularly. However, there were a few days of the week which were even more depressing. Those were the days when social sciences was one of the periods.
I detested this subject and literally prayed to god that the period gets over sooner than later. Now I understand how naive and stupid I was. I missed out on a wealth of information as well as knowledge by being a hater of social sciences. Age has mellowed me a lot. I now feel that I am duty bound to tell my young readers about the importance of social sciences. As a part of our character building and knowledge enhancing.
Looking At The Past Helps Build Future
I am sure all the readers who are going through this article are products of the past. You are here because of your forefathers, grandparents and parents. Tomorrow you will also pass the baton on to the next generation. As I have started doing. When you learn to use social sciences; as a science you certainly will stand to benefit from the same.
This is because it gives you an insight into the past. I strongly believe that in spite of advances in technology it would be impossible for me to forget the past. Because of this, technology is merely an enabler. The foundations of the past continue to be the same and virtues never change. Hence when you take time and understand social sciences you learn about the past.
It certainly helps you to borrow a few lessons from the past; which I am sure will help to guide and shape your future. As science teaches you logic, social sciences teaches you emotions.
It Could Help Us To Become Healthier Persons
I remember my childhood being famous (or notorious?) for many life threatening diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. I am sure not many of my younger friends would have heard about plague, whooping cough, small pox, polio, leprosy and other such diseases. When I was a young child, I have seen many hundreds of people being affected by such diseases. Also, quite a few of them also died.
Today the diseases may not be there and most of them were caused because of unhealthy surroundings. Hence making social sciences a part of our education without any doubt; and would help us to be a healthier community and nation. It is again about taking lessons from the past.
It Teaches More About Our Culture And Background
I have after so many years understood the real meaning of the term that Man is a Social Animal. We believe in staying together as a clan. We try to pick up the practices and customs; which have been followed for generations by our ancestors. When I pride in the fact that I am a Christian, a Muslim, a Hindu or a Buddhist; I am certainly referring to my past.
Hence I use my past as a reference past to describe my future. And I am proud of it. Therefore, I appeal to my young readers to understand that being in touch with social sciences means you are being in touch with the past; being in touch with your culture and being in touch with history.
It Broadens Horizons
Another reason why I urge my readers to be in touch with social sciences is because it will help you to broaden your horizon. You must have heard about the Frog in the Well. It never knew anything about the mighty oceans and seas because it has never seen anything of the like. Hence if you do not wish to be called as a frog in the well; then it is extremely vital that you learn something more about this world.
In other words you have to expand your horizons and look at the world beyond the ordinary myopic view. I am sure that being in touch with social sciences will certainly help you in more ways than one. Hence whether it is about being in the know regarding the evolution of other histories and cultures. Or about understanding about changes which have give new direction to mankind, social sciences is always a witness to it.
