Math – Maniac’s Memoir
I was running after them. Therefore, I could not control myself; and I felt as if I had only one solo aim in my life. Also, I wanted to take complete hold of them, I wanted to master them. Having an unquenchable thirst to have them completely. It was like a kind of frenzy going on throughout my body; especially my brain… and even heart!
Scarcely had it happened that the brain and heart spoke the same thing but it was one such occasion when this unbelievable thing was happening. Am I going mad? Or else why would I be so very passionate about them and wanted to own them totally. There was a sense of possessiveness that they are mine and only mine. They are my dear, very dear – NUMBERS!
Moreover, I was able to catch hold of them that night, in my dream. That is where it had all started. My flight of the jeopardizing journey of mastering the mystery of Math Education had taken off when I was four years of age. Oh, did I mention jeopardizing? Being a geek itself is a crazy thing in this civilized society and I was a Math geek. No wonder I have a nerdy life!
Magic of Math
One day, my mother was having a terrible fight with her. By her, I mean the cute girl, Angela, who used to baby sit me. The fight was regarding the payment. Angela did not turn up for a couple of days that month. So, my Mom was not ready to compensate for the whole month. That was fine. The fight was regarding the calculation of days and the corresponding amount. With the flow of conversation, I could make out that my Mom was heading in the right direction.
Angela was somehow trying to cheat and chunk out some extra bucks! After all, if you cannot convince people, then confuse them. Then I was 12. My journey of Math was in full form; and I was halfway through coordinate geometry! Well, that does not mean that I will leave my Mom to fight alone, right? So, I took the stage, interrupted their discussion and started explaining Angela; where she was going wrong with all sorts of permutations as well as combinations formulas!
Yes, I loved to permute and combine Math
Honestly, I think I continued for half an hour with this social service of education to Angela. Yes, I was successful too! My Mom’s precious penny was saved as Angela almost snatched whatever amount my Mom was giving her and without a word dashed out of the room. Very disappointed I was! Always, I hate students who run away in the middle of Math class. And that was the only class I ever gave to Angela; as she never came back again! Sigh!
Gradually, I crept into my teens. That part of the life when most of the girls toiled hard to become the hot babes of high school. I was no different either! Just, with a twist in the tale. I was more of a Math Babe amongst the crowd of cutes in the high school. Besides, I remember Sandra coming up to me one day in the library for solving an algebra equation. Plus, I would like to mention here that I am continuing my social service of Math education after Angela’s incident.
Although, I am yet to get a good student!
There was this boy named Derek studying with me in the same library. Therefore, I could notice that whatever I am trying to explain to Sandra was just going tangent over her head (Tangent, a geometry concept; Ah! Let us not get into the details now) as she was glued to Derek. Pretty exhausted and after having wasted fifteen minutes of my precious Math time, I handed over the problem as well the student to Derek! The class went for hours after that and Sandra was the most attentive student ever. How rude!
Life is a big roller coaster ride for people like us. You are always a part of a different world. Your friends do not like to have you with them. Most often, you are secluded from the infamous friend circle. They feel a ‘math nerd’ is a total outcast. Am I sounding too negative? Well, these are just the facts that I am stating. In any case, I had my friends – my numbers. Now I live happily with them!
